Software development for Akira Takayama’s Heterotopia – Abu Dhabi urban installation/sound-walk, exhibited at the Durub Al Tawaya VI (Abu Dhabi AE, 2019) and commissioned by Port B. The project started in Tokyo in 2013 and has developed in cities throughout Asia and Europe, taking on topics like migration routes, refugees, language and food. In its Abu Dhabi version, the performance guides visitors through a downloadable mobile application to six destination points around the city. Once the visitors arrive at each spot, an audio recording plays a story that might have taken place there. Six local and international writers and poets were commissioned to write a text inspired by one of these different locations, carefully selected by the artist in a fictional pairing that explores hidden themes within the city.

Ubique Media has developed the software for Heterotopia – Abu Dhabi, as well as for Piraeus/Heterotopia (Athens, GR 2017) both for Android and iOS in the respective native languages (Swift and Java), with certain modules been coded in C++14. Ubique Media has closely collaborated with the artist and the production team to carefully customise and fine-tune the application according the their needs and, more, took care of preinstalling the software to a number of devices as well as of preparing and distributing App Store and Google Play Store versions of it. Heterotopia – Abu Dhabi is an artwork by Akira Takayama. The graphic design for the application has been carried out by Usama Sarwar.

The software for Heterotopia – Abu Dhabi is available at the App Store and Google Play Store under the names Heterotopia_abu_en and Heterotopia_abu_ar.
